Welcome to our weekly newsletter and to the month of May! For many of you, it is the last month of the school year, and we certainly know the many emotions that come with that. Our team at ICG sincerely hopes that you have had a wonderful year, that you recognize how important your role is in the lives of students and teachers, and that you allow this year's accomplishments to fuel your remaining weeks in this school year.

We hope you enjoyed last week's special edition newsletter featuring our Teaching Learning Coaching Conference - TLC 2023: A Year In the Life of a Coach. If you missed it, or any other newsletter, you can always find them on our website.

In today’s newsletter, we share our latest Coaching Conversations podcast episode with our guest, Michelle Lis. Michelle and Jim provide insight into what it takes to create a successful instructional coaching program.

The Partnership Principles are at the core of everything we do at the Instructional Coaching Group. This week's new blog post looks at a simple way you can establish a shared understanding of the partnership approach in your school or district.

To say that we are equal with other people means that we see the other person as of equal value. In our 'free resource' section we highlight the first Partnership Principle - Equality. This principle is as important to school improvement as any instructional strategy!

This week's featured workshop is What Administrators Need to Know. This virtual workshop is a great opportunity to get clarity on what coaches do and how they can be supported. It will provide you with a deep understanding of how instructional coaches and administrators can collaborate to ensure that coaches have an unmistakably positive impact on teachers’ teaching and students’ learning.

Always remember that we welcome your coaching stories and input, so be sure to share with us. Take care!

Unpacking the Partnership Principles with Your Team

Most people walk away from our workshops with a clear understanding of the importance of the partnership principles and they are energized by the idea of how the partnership principles could work for their entire school or organization.

In today's blog post, we provide a possible protocol for generating meaningful discussions around the partnership principles and how these principles can become the foundation for how we show up for those around us.

Partnership Principles: Equality

The Partnership Principles are one of the Seven Success Factors for Instructional Coaching.

We work from seven Partnership Principles to guide what we do: equality, choice, voice, dialogue, praxis, reflection, and reciprocity. This week we take a look at the principle of equality.

If we want to move kids and schools forward, equality needs to be a priority. In this video clip, Jim Knight examines the issue of equality and the ease with which we all jump to judgment about others.

Fostering equality, understanding that everyone is not the same but everyone counts the same, is as important to school improvement as any instructional strategy. All educators are created equal, and in an environment that walks the talk of that principle, students and schools move in the right direction.

Partnership Learning: Presentations That Make an Impact

In this video, Jim talks about the power of a great presentation. Jim explains how the Partnership Principles play out differently when you conduct a workshop or lead a presentation and how they should be an integral part of professional development. When the Partnership Principles are at the center of your presentation or workshop it creates awareness and common knowledge. It can be difficult to balance the inherent challenge of being in a position of power (the presenter) and working as a partner with people in the audience, but in our asynchronous course Partnership Learning: Presentations That Make an Impact, Jim shows you how to establish a partnership and radically change your presentations and workshops!

What Administrators Need to Know

The impact coaches have is directly related to how effectively they are supported (or not supported) by their administrators. For that reason, it is crucial that administrators participate in professional development that clarifies what coaches do and how they can be supported.

We are happy to share that we will be hosting another What Administrators Need to Know virtual workshop on July 13, 2023. This workshop will give administrators the opportunity to learn about the Partnership Principles that should guide coaches' interactions with teachers, the six specific actions administrators can take to support coaches effectively, the five simple truths of helping that must be addressed for any professional development activity to be effective, and more!
