Overview:
The Instructional Coaching Group (ICG), a B-Corp organization, is seeking a Designer to join our in-house creative team. We are looking for an individual with strong skills and passion for visual design across different media: we routinely create in the areas of print, web, video, social media, and brand identity.
Time commitment:
Independent Contract Position averaging 15-25 hours / week
Why is this role important for ICG's work?ICG was founded with an iterative design process at the center of its work. We pride ourselves in being nimble as a company, continuously experimenting to see which of our ideas stick (and which of them don't!). We're committed to doing things differently, creating any materials necessary for making a positive impact in education. To that end, our design team is highly trusted and empowered to bring ideas to life. Designers on our team listen, ideate, prototype, create, and test ideas across various media. Our vision for ICG's design team is a group of learners who get excited when they hear, "Maybe we should try this out?"—eager to solve all kinds of problems, so that students everywhere can have better education and better lives.
Why Instructional Coaching Group?ICG's mission is to have an unmistakably positive impact on the lives of students all over the world by improving the education systems they rely on—to that end, we create research-based professional learning experiences for teachers, instructional coaches, and school administrators centered around our universally-applicable improvement model, which leads to real, measurable change. We believe every student deserves the best education imaginable, and that this mission is worth the effort it requires.
Relevant experience and mindset:
1. A portfolio demonstrating your sense of design including color, visual hierarchy, and typography: you know the difference between “good” and “great” and are able to work through team dynamics, clients and timelines to deliver excellent design.
2. Hunger for learning: ICG is a learning organization. In the same way we believe everyone on our team can contribute to a project, we believe every new project or situation offers something to be learned. Because we are a small, growing team, flexibility will be essential to the success of this role.
3. User-centered perspective: You understand and can communicate a human-centered approach to design and be comfortable going out into the world for inspiration.
4. Team skills: You work best in a participatory, team-based environment. You're comfortable collaborating and co-creating with and for our internal team as well as our audience.
5. Comfort with collaboration: Partnership, one of our core values, is a thread in everything we do. From interviewing our users to gain insights into how they see the world, to collaborating with various content experts on our team, we always make space for the perspective of others. Our team puts a lot of trust in the creative team, and we foster that trust by maintaining shared understanding and openness to ideas other than our own.
6. Communication skills: You have strong verbal and visual presentation skills. You're able to understand and describe the perspective of the people you're designing for. You also understand and can speak to the value of design in a business context.
7. Prototyping skills: You get excited to brainstorm, and you're comfortable learning by trial and error. You have experience sketching and creating digital and physical mockups.
8. Openness: Designers need to be flexible and open-minded, especially when working with our small in-house team, where various roles are encouraged to contribute and collaborate creatively. Successful candidates are optimistic, generative, and are open to new ideas and ways of working.
Minimum Requirements and Qualifications:
1. Strong communication skills
2. Bachelor's degree education in Graphic Design, New Media, or professional equivalent preferred but not required.
3. Fluency with Adobe Creative Suite and Figma
4. Be self-directed toward excellent work outcomes, comfort level in asynchronous, non-rules based environments.
5. Ability to work on a fully virtual team
6. Availability to attend weekly team meetings for 90 minutes per week.
Not required, but would be great:
1. Experience in Ed-Tech or design for learning
2. Experience with: Webflow and/or Animation / Designing assets for video
